L.A. realness for German students with American dreams

Updated: Jan 8

Is Los Angeles such a beautiful place?

Lots of German people imagine L.A. like they see it in movies. They think there are rich people, and the sun shines every day.

There are a few rich people, but it's a minority. Of 4,000,000 people living in L.A., just 200,000 of them are “rich.”

L.A. is a town with lots of poor people on the streets, and it's dangerous in some districts. You should be careful when you want to visit the town. Still the city has a reputation for being wealthy.

One 9th grade RSH student wishes to visit Los Angeles in the summer because of its theme parks and sightseeing, like Hollywood and the Griffith Observatory. He also wants to see where movies were filmed, e.g. Beverly Hills Cop, Bad Boys, Nackte Kanone, Chips, and City of Lies.

Kaouthar said that she likes to visit L.A. in summer, because she wants to see Hollywood, the famous sights. But she also hopes to see Walmart and Target. These are things she knows from the English lessons in 8th grade and from social media. She also said that she connects L.A. with celebrities and fame. Although she knows about the earthquakes and the poor people in L.A.

But L.A. offers lots of other attractions, like the Santa Monica and El Matador beaches. Theme Parks, like Universal Studios, Warner Bros. and the Disneyland Park. Or You can visit L.A.’s County Museum, the TCL Chinese Theatre or the Venice District.

Another RSH 9th grader said that he wants to visit L.A. in summer, but he wants to see the high buildings. He saw it in the video game  “Grand Theft Auto” and wants to visit the Santa Monica Pier. He also thinks about drugs when he imagines L.A., so he knows a bit about L.A.’s dangerous sides.

“Skid Row,” for example, is a district around an old train station with about 5,000 homeless people. They have the most dangerous neighborhoods in L.A. Many shops and markets have gone broke. And the city has an unemployment rate of 8.7%.

Of course, if you only learn about L.A. once in 8th grade English class and through films, you probably don’t know about the poor and unpopular places.

In the end, Los Angeles is a nice city, and you can expect to enjoy its sights and attractions. But before you visit, be aware that L.A. might not be as pretty as in the films. For your safety, and to have a good time, inform yourself about the city.
