Stereotypes stop us from enjoying anime

Many in my friend circle are anti-anime. And many friends of my friends have the same view.

Many people don’t watch anime because they think they are filled with tentacles and false images of women. Some special audiences may watch these kinds, but many anime are not like this.

Some also view anime as childish. Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online, for example, are thought to be just for children, but people 18+ can watch it too.

Many parents also say anime are too brutal for children. Many are, but there are also anime without violence, like Pokémon and Digimon, etc.

The problem with the stereotypes of anime is that the anime producers are not getting the recognition for the art the make, because the genre is often dismissed.

A solution: trying one anime episode out. Watch it and test your prejudice. I have a friend, Lukas, who did just this. He thought anime wasn’t for him, but then he watched a show and liked it. Now he finds the entire genre good.

Another solution: inform oneself about anime. Google the history, read the comments, find out the variety of shows that are available.

Give anime a chance. “It’s not good.” “I won’t watch it.” “It’s perverted.” are excuses, and you can miss out on something you might really like.
