Many young users know how it is to open TikTok for a second and get trapped scrolling for hours. To blame is the algorithm that selects the videos for you, suggesting one clip after another to match your preferences. The more you interact with certain types of videos, the more likely it is that similar content will be suggested to you. It makes it hard to look away, because you have to consciously stop the videos; they’re on "autoplay" and tailored exactly to what you like.
According to TikTok’s 'Authenticity, Happiness and Joy' research, conducted by Flamingo Group in collaboration with GroupMasked, when asked how they perceive the content on TikTok, respondents described it as authentic, genuine, unfiltered and forward-thinking.
64% of users say they can show the „real them“ on TikTok.56% of TikTok users say they can post videos they wouldn't post elsewhere.53% of users say they trust that others show „the real“ them on TikTok.
It’s no surprise that TikTok users love the app, and it shows. They spend an average whopping 95 minutes per day (over 1.5 hours) on the platform.
But it has negative effects on the brain. The term "TikTok brain" is used to describe some of the negative aspects associated with the platform, including a lower attention span and increased anxiety and depression. Too much time spent on TikTok can become problematic and lead to addiction.
And according to TikTok stats, "entertainment" is the world's most popular content category on the platform. This particular hashtag has amassed 535 billion hashtag views. The next most popular categories are dancing, pranks, fitness/sports and home renovation/DIY.
So, it seems, 75% of TikTok users go to the app to be entertained. People with this attitude want to laugh, lift their spirits and not take things too seriously. But if it becomes too much, it harms one’s brain.
